They differ enough from one another to be thought of as two dances rather than two versions of the same dance. I will mention this third dance from time to time.
You may recognize some of the author's themes from his earlier works: memory and being; and man-made Systems taking on lives of their own.
What is baroque dance?
Great Britain has been experimenting for some time now with society as Panopticon, so it isn't much of a stretch to add an omniscient, ever-helpful over-helpful? This is not an easy read.
The author sees it as his duty to improve your vocabulary, which he does, by the use of uncommon philosophical terms. At well over s it's not a quick read, either, and my principal emotion for the first half of the book is that of confusion. For one thing, characters begin soliloquys without identifying themselves, and it may take several paragraphs to catch on as to who is speaking.
The various actors are well-developed, having depth and feeling, and speak directly to the reader. If you persevere to the very end and don't lose heart, you will be rewarded with answers to the various mysteries; satisfying ones, at that. I loved the other pemberton baroque date wanted books by Nick Harkaway that I read. Tigerman and Angelmaker are amazing novels and I highly recommend them.
I think maybe this was the book Mr. Harkaway really wanted to write once he got enough cred to choose his own project. What it's not is interesting enough to keep a reader engaged throughout its length. I wanted to find out whether it would redeem my efforts after the long slog. It did not. You have been warned. If you like Derrida, tho, you're in for a treat! I have to admit that the book - an almost tome - was a bit of a slog and Pemberton baroque date wanted was on the verge of giving up on it.
Then about half-way through, it clicked for me and I needed to find out what was going on.
Definitely worth it! I am a Nick Harkaway fan, and there is much to like about this hefty novel. There are wonderful 'characters' with great imagery, a in all of Harkaway's work.
The format is dizzying and le to much confusion during the reading. I confess that I spent the entire three weeks of check out, checking via the internet over many obscure historical references, which is unnecessary- Harkaway uses real history as backdrops for his stories.
At times, though, this novel felt like a graduate level philosophy course, especially on the theory of constructs. Credit Harkaway for making it interesting, but some of it was a bit of a slog. Gnomon is a word meaning a fixed reference point, but in Nick Harkaway's new near-future mystery it's the randomly generated codename for an investigation.
This story has so many layers to it but it's all about surveillance and identity and how we trust what we see in the world around us.
It's great and includes Ethiopian artists, Greek high finance traders, an ancient alchemist and even some excursions into the cosmos. I loved it.
Like Mitchell, Harkaway revels in weaving multiple nested narratives spanning eras into epic speculative fiction. Harkaway takes it one pemberton baroque date wanted further in that the whole book turns into a mind-blowing puzzle you're compelled to solve, if you're a cat of the curious persuasion. This book is not an easy read all the puzzles require a lot of thinking, so you can't gap out and miss a paragraph thinking about the laundrybut it is an unmitigated masterpiece of speculative fiction.
At several points during this book I wanted to stand up and clap. Please also read this book so I have someone with whom to yell about it. Update: An hour after finishing this book, I cannot make myself start anything else in my TBR pile because pemberton baroque date wanted of those books could possibly be as good.
So, basically, my reading relationship status update is that I am in a monographically monogamous relationship with this book. RIP my reading productivity ever again. It infects the brain and unfolds in the mind uniquely. The easy way to describe it is a science fiction thriller. But like the plot and theme of the book illustrate, peel off that top onion skin of labels, and you find so many more layers beneath. The science fiction side was fully realized. Lots of tech and math, but nothing too overwhelming. At times I only caught the spirit, not the letter of the math, but it was enough.
As the author intended. Oh, my. I wanted to love this book, but it was a bit of a slog--almost s, multiple narrators, and some dense philosophical musing obscure an actual plot. This book is assuredly smarter than I am. Try searching for Gnomon to see if PPL owns related versions of the work. Suggest for purchase. Help Help, opens a new window. Admin Admin Admin, collapsed. Average Rating:. Rate this:. In the world of Gnomon, citizens are ceaselessly observed and democracy has reached a pinnacle of "transparency. Immersing herself in neural recordings of pemberton baroque date wanted interrogation, she finds a panorama of characters and events that Hunter gave life to in order to forestall the investigation: a lovelorn financier in Athens who has a mystical experience with a shark; a brilliant alchemist in ancient Carthage confronting the unexpected outcome of her invention; an expat Ethiopian painter in London deing a controversial new video game.
